Integrative medicine is an approach to medical care that combines conventional medicine with CAM practices, which have been shown through science to be safe and effective (As defined by the National Institute of Health - NIH).

Q: What is the CAM Space ?

A fast-growing field - Complementary and Alternative Medicine, includes other systems of medicine and many modalities, some pre-existing Modern, Western Medicine by hundreds and even thousands of years. Notable examples are systems of medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurvedic Medicine (Originated in India), Homeopathic Medicine (Originated in Central Europe) and also modalities, such as Acupuncture, Meditation, Massage Therapy, ….(NIH definition).

Q: What is Homeopathy ? What does Homeopathy treat?

Homeopathy, also known as homeopathic medicine, is a medical system that was developed in Germany, by Dr. Samuel Friedrich Hahnemann, more than 200 years ago. It’s based on two theories:

  • “Like cures like”—the notion that a disease can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms in healthy people.

  • “Law of minimum dose”—the notion that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. Many homeopathic products are so diluted that no molecules of the original substance remain.

As defined by the NIH (National Institute of Health)

The word "homeopathy" comes from the Greek words homios meaning "similar" and pathos meaning "suffering"

A: Homeopathy treats a wide spectrum of conditions, both acute and chronic.

Acute conditions occur suddenly, have immediate or rapidly developing symptoms and depending on how quickly and well they are being addressed, they tend to resolve in a short period of time. Examples of acute conditions, that are treated by homeopathy, but not limited to are: allergies, colds and coughs, flu, and flu like symptoms, different types of acute pain, such as teething, burning pain, lacerating pain, skin disorders, etc…

Chronic conditions have a slow onset, as they develop over time, they persist and can get worst. Chronic conditions in most cases can be managed to alleviate symptoms and restore health to a stage of balance. Examples of chronic conditions are arthritis, diabetes, cancer, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, other inflammatory bowel diseases, osteoporosis, …. Homeopathic remedies tailored to the individual specific expression of the dis-ease, can alleviate many of the symptoms and help manage chronic conditions.

Q: Can homeopathic medicines be taken with other conventional medications?

A: Homeopathic dilutions above the 6 C (Centesimal potency) are known to be safe to administer with conventional medicines as they act as a complement, without interfering with the current mode of action but rather supporting the organism to move in the direction of cure.

Q: Who is Homeopathy for?

A: Homeopathy is safe to use in all patient populations, from children to adults and seniors, both men and women.

Q: Are homeopathic remedies reviewed and approved by Health Authorities?

A: Homeopathic remedies/medicines have been regulated by the FDA (Foood and Drug Administration) in the United States, and Health Canada and are manufactured by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia and the Drug Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Homeopathic remedies hold a drug identification number (DIN).

Q: What is the Evidence Behind Homeopathy?

A: There is a comprehensive body of evidence upon which Homeopathy was founded and demonstrated clinically.

The “Organon of the Medical Art of Healing” written by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann over many years of practice laid out the doctrine of his ideas of the system of medical therapeutics termed as homeopathy. The work was repeatedly revised and published in six editions, with the name changed from the second onwards to Organon of Medicine. Today, the Organon is the cornerstone of homeopathic principles and practice, and it is used by homeopathy students and practitioners around the world.

The next foundational body of evidence for the Homeopathic practice is “The Synthesis”, also known as the Repertorium Homoeopathicum Syntheticum, which was born out of the need to overcome the difficulty in finding the similimum quickly, or in other words the matching remedy for the entire set of symptoms. This led to the development of an index to the symptoms of the Materia Medica i.e. Repertory.

Currently, the most updated and comprehensive version of The Synthesis has been written by Dr. Frederik Schroyens. This latest 9.1 version of Synthesis has about 235,000 additions from highly respected homeopathic texts, and 2373 remedies, giving priority to the classical authors – Hahnemann, Kent, Hering, Allen, Clarke, Boericke, Knerr etc. The editor gives an assurance that all additions are ‘repeatedly checked’ and that those from living authors are added ‘only with caution’ and usually in low type to maintain accuracy.
